Billy
and the Bad Boys, a.k.a. Morris Communications
The
publication: The Savannah Morning News
The
Dates: way back
What
they got: eight years of blood
What
I got: how to write
Why
I do it again? Tough question. There are some great people
at that newspaper. But I don't think so. Most of the really
talented ones went off to the AP, ABC News, Atlanta Constitution,
and other points.
Besides,
to work there, you'd have to live in Savannah, which even
the prior residents (the Yamacraw) never did (Hey, Oglethorpe;
dude, it's in the middle of a swamp!)
Best
joke about Morris Communications:
Seems
when the Des Moines Register was up for sale way back in
the 70s (or was it the 80s?), it was reported that teams
of execs from other newspaper chains descended on the press
operations, crawling all over the building. It was noted
that the NY Times crew looked quite spiffy in their three-piece
suits as they claimbed through the press rooms . . . Then
there was the "gang from Morris Newspapers (as they
were called then), who looked like a a convention of aluminum
sliding salesmen."
Ouch!
